Home E News E LPU Students Return Transformed from Mission Trip to Puerto Rico

University, California

This spring, a team of 51视频 students traveled to Arecibo, Puerto Rico, to serve alongside missionaries Daniel and Yolanda Rivera at Dream Center Esperanza, a ministry plant of the Dream Center LA. Partnering with local churches and the broader Foursquare family, the team stepped into a powerful time of service, spiritual renewal, and personal transformation.

Over the course of their mission, students engaged in various outreach efforts including city clean-up projects, packing and distributing lunches and groceries, ministering door-to-door, and praying with community members. Their efforts met both physical and spiritual needs in the community鈥攂ringing hope, healing, and the love of Jesus in tangible ways.

鈥淥ur ministry easily impacted hundreds. I believe at least 500 were fed, if not more,鈥 shared Ray Furr, LPU student and team leader. 鈥淲e saw physical healings, salvations, and spiritual breakthroughs not only in those we ministered to鈥攂ut within our team as well.鈥

Outreach Highlights听

Throughout their time in Puerto Rico, the team:

  • Carried out at least five city service projects, including a community clean-up in government housing areas.
  • Hosted outdoor church and worship services.
  • Evangelized through food distribution using a mobile hotdog cart.
  • Partnered with the Foursquare Hispanic District鈥檚 Empowered Tour event.
  • Served the homeless and elderly by distributing food and clothing.
  • Witnessed two physical healings, three personal healings on the team, and at least six salvations and re-dedications.
  • Saw two people baptized in the Holy Spirit鈥攐ne before departing, and one during the trip.
In addition, LPU student Jaime Morales will be interning this summer with Dream Center Esperanza, further strengthening the university鈥檚 partnership with this vital ministry. The team also celebrated job opportunities being extended to local residents through connections with Chick-fil-A, thanks to local ministry efforts.
Student Testimonies
The impact of the trip on students was profound and deeply personal. Many described how God reshaped their understanding of ministry and called them to deeper humility and boldness in their faith.
Ray Furr shared: 鈥淕od peeled back some of the callousness in my heart and showed me a new love for people. He broke down my pride and taught me to love unconditionally. That has been my testimony.鈥
Ava Moen, who speaks Spanish, recounted how she struggled with confidence in using the language in a new context.
鈥淭he Lord gave me the words I needed as I translated for a teammate during prayer. My faith grew in the moment, and I knew God was with me.鈥
Anthony Brunske reflected on a moment during a Sunday church service held in a government housing community: 鈥淕od was moving powerfully. During worship, a skit, and through testimonies, people wept and encountered Jesus. It was one of the clearest moments where I saw God鈥檚 presence at work.鈥
Ysa Puente described a divine appointment: 鈥淲e invited a young nurse to join our outdoor service just before her shift. She had been praying that day for confirmation that God saw her. Our prayer and encouragement fulfilled what God told her would happen鈥攕he left strengthened in faith.鈥
From anonymous student survey responses:
鈥淗e used me to pray and speak life into others鈥攎y faith was strengthened seeing my peers so radical for Jesus.鈥
鈥淕od taught me humility and reminded me that ministry is about servanthood, not the 蝉辫辞迟濒颈驳丑迟.鈥
鈥淗e softened my heart and showed me the love of His kingdom.鈥
A Lasting Impact
This mission trip was not just about service鈥攊t was about transformation. Students stepped out in boldness, grew in spiritual maturity, and discovered anew what it means to live a life surrendered to Christ. The community of Arecibo was touched by their presence, but a deeper transformation occurred in the hearts of those who went.
At 51视频, we believe that the world is our classroom. Experiences like this mission trip are part of our commitment to prepare students for Spirit-empowered ministry and service in every context鈥攍ocally and globally.
